Abstract

Solutions of polymers having a basis of acrylonitrile in a high boiling solvent having a basis of dimethyl formamide are spun according to the process of Specification 605,579 in the apparatus of Specification 605,612, the walls of the evaporative chamber being heated to 100-200 DEG C. and the walls on which condensation occurs being at a temperature below 100 DEG C. The solvent may be dimethyl formamide mixed, if desired, with 5 to 200 per cent. by weight of the polymer, of cyclohexanone. The polymer may be a copolymer of acrylonitrile or a mixture of polyacrylonitrile and another polymer. The temperature of the walls of the condensation chamber may be between 50 and 100 DEG C. At the top of the heater a temperature of between 100 and 300 DEG C. may be maintained. Pigments, plasticizers, dyes, antistatic agents and other additives may be present in the spinning solution. The evaporative atmosphere may be air or an inert or reducing gas. In an example a composition comprising 24 parts by weight of polyacrylonitrile, 72.5 parts by weight of dimethyl formamide and 3.5 parts by weight of cyclohexanone is spun at 130 DEG C. in the apparatus of Specification 605,612. The walls of the extrusion chamber are at 150 DEG C., the condensation chamber being at 20 DEG C. The temperature at the top of the heater is 200 DEG C. Specification 579,887 also is referred to.
