Abstract
Polymers containing nitrile groups, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, an acrylonitrile/vinyl chloride copolymer and vinylidene cyanide homo- and copolymers, are reacted with hydroxylamine so that at least 0.3% but less than 20% of the monomeric units containing nitrile groups in the starting polymer are reacted. The process may be carried out in an aqueous medium, but is preferably effected in a solution of the polymer in a solvent such as dimethyl formamide; the resulting polymer solutions may be formed into films by casting on to glass plates or into fibres by spinning into water with subsequent stretching of the fibres so formed. The fibres and films have dye affinity. Specification 833,204 is referred to.
