Abstract

Fibres comprising polymers containing nitrile groups, such as polyacrylonitrile, poly-methacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene cyanide and cyanoethylated cellulose, are reacted with hydroxylamine in aqueous solution at pH 2-7 in the presence of one or more dyestuffs.ALSO:Polymers containing nitrile groups are treated with hydroxylamine in an aqueous medium, the pH of which is less than 7 but more than 2 during the whole course of the reaction. Polymers specified, which may be in the form of fibres, are homopolymers and copolymers, including graft and block polymers, of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, and vinylidene cyanide and cyanoethylated cellulose. The resulting polymeric materials have affinity for dyestuffs, particularly acid dyestuffs, and the reaction with hydroxylamine may be performed in the presence of one or more dyestuffs.
