Abstract

Polymers and copolymers containing a major proportion of acrylonitrile, such as a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate, are dyed in a dyebath containing one or more acid dyestuffs in the presence of a long-chain cationactive quaternary ammonium salt in which the long-chain is aliphatic and contains at least 10 carbon atoms, e.g. cetyltriethylammonium p-toluene sulphonate and the trimethylammonium methyl sulphate of monostearyl m-phenylenediamine. Specification 714,530 is referred to.ALSO:Films and threads made from polymers and copolymers containing a major proportion of acrylonitrile, such as a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate, are dyed in a dyebath containing one or more acid dyestuffs in the presence of a longchain cation-active quaternary ammonium salt in which the long chain is aliphatic and contains at least 10 carbon atoms, e.g., cetyl triethylammonium p - toluene sulphonate and the trimethylammonium methyl sulphate of monostearyl m-phenylene diamine. The quaternary ammonium salt is preferably applied to the thread before the latter is dried after wet-spinning so that the salt is deposited in the thread on drying; alternatively, the salt may be added to the spinning or casting solution, or to the dyebath.
