Abstract

797,551. Electrodeposition of polymeric materials. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Sept. 15, 1955 [Oct. 11, 1954], No. 26504/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. In the electrodeposition on to a metallic support of a polymeric material from an aqueous dispersion, the dispersion is continuously removed from the electrolytic cell and passed through an ion-exchange resin of the weak carboxylic acid type buffered to pH 6 to 7 for sufficient time to change the pH of the dispersion to a value of from 6 to 8, and the treated dispersion is then returned to the cell. Typically the process is applied to the codeposition on a wire of polytetrafluoroethylene and polyisobutylene as in Specification 797,001, the overflow from the electrolytic cell being passed through a bed of a weak carboxylic acid ion exchange resin buffered with citric acid and disodium hydrogen phosphate to pH 6.4 to 6.6, and the so-treated effluent is pumped to a storage tank where the concentration of the polymeric codispersion is brought to a concentration of 30-50 per cent solids by suitable addition before return to the cell.
