Abstract

1,272,934. Electro-machining. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. Nov.3, 1969 [Aug.2, 1968], No.36895/68. Heading C7B. In electro-machining a workpiece 2 as anode, its potential with respect to the electrolyte 7 is accurately controlled within the second, plateau, region of the Jacquet voltage-current curve to produce a smooth finish on the workpiece by detecting the P.D. between the anode and a reference electrode 4 immersed in the electrolyte close to the cathode 1 and in response thereto controlling the output of the D.C. source 8, e.g. using an appropriately connected potentiostat 5, to maintain the P.D. at the predetermined value. The reference electrode may be a calomel or Ag-AgCl electrode comprising a luggin capillary. The electrolyte may be a solution of NaCl, with or without Na 2 CO 3 , Na 3 PO 4 or Na 3 Fe(CN) 6 .
