Abstract
899,089. Detecting impurities in fluids. NOVAK, J. V. A. March 31, 1959 [April 1, 1958], No. 10770/59. Class 37. Sulphur dioxide is detected in a polarographic cell comprising a carbon anode A, the sides of which are coated with polyethylene, and a reference electrode K. As described, the cathode K is a wire, rod or plate of silver or copper and the electrolyte B, sulphuric acid containing copper sulphate or silver cations. The active face of the carbon anode A is bevelled to prevent accumulation of bubbles. SO2 may be detected in a gas admitted via tube e by bubbling it through the electrolyte B which is replenished via tube c. The level is controlled by an overflow f. The pressure and temperature may be controlled. When the potentiometer h has been set to give a specified reading on voltmeter V, the current through the recorder j is proportional to the concentration of SO2. The cell may be used to detect SO2 in a liquid flowing through it; sulphuric or nitric acid and copper sulphate being added if necessary.
