Abstract
1392263 Determining alumina SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 16 July 1973 [18 July 1972] 33737/73 Heading G1N [Also in Divisions C7, G3] The concentration of alumina in a known type of aluminium electrolysis cell is controlled by passing the cell current through a sampling cycle as shown, the cell voltage and current being measured at 52,53 and 56,58 after a first and second current reduction respectively, the current then being returned to its normal value 59. From the measured values the concentration of alumina in the cell is calculated so that, at the next servicing of the cell, the supply of alumina to the electrolyte is varied to bring the alumina concentration back to a desired value. Under given conditions of cell voltage instability, the cell current is returned to its normal value at 60 or 61 without taking measurements. Details are given of percentage current reductions to be used and when the measurements are to be taken. The cell is described with reference to Fig.1 (not shown).
