1340069 Making carbon fibres NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 23 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 45412/70 Heading C1A Carbon fibres are made by oxidizing fibres formed from homopolymers of acrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile containing a minor proportion of a copolymerizable monomer, preventing contact between the oxidized fibres and water vapour at temperatures above 300‹C., then carbonizing the oxidized fibres. The process may be effected batchwise or as a continuous process. In the former case, the oxidized fibres may be stored in a dry atmosphere whilst in the latter case the oxidized fibres are dried prior to entry into the carbonizing furnace, or a dry inert gas is passed countercurrent to the advancing fibres thereby preventing hydrolysis of nitrile groups. Tensile strengths of carbon fibre tow produced at various drying temperatures are given.
