Abstract
1416366 Heat-resistant fibres AGENCY OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 5 Feb 1973 [3 Feb 1972 23 March 1972] 5666/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division C1] In manufacturing heat resistant fibres, organic polymeric fibres are heated to a temperature in the range 170‹ to 350‹ C. in an atmosphere containing 25% or more by volume of oxygen gas and at least 0À5% by volume of a Brondstedt or Lewis acid which is gaseous at ambient tempera. tures. The fibres so obtained may be further heated in an inert atmsophere to a temperature in the range 180‹ to 3000‹ C. when carbon or graphite fibres may be obtained. The concentration of oxygen may be from 25% to 99À5% by volume, and the acid may be in a concentration of from 0À5 to 50% by volume. The preferred acid is HCl and tension may be applied to the fibre during treatment. The starting fibre may be partially oxidized by previous heating in an oxygen containing atmosphere. The fibre used may be an acrylic fibre, or one derived by dehydrating polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl chloride.
