Abstract

Blast furnace yields are improved by injection of oxidising gas into the tuyere combustion zone independently of the air blast so that combustion zone is extended towards the centre of the furnace taking in part of the dead zone. The gas is either injected at supersonic speeds so that it passes directly through the combustion zone without reaction or decomposition, or alternatively it is injected with a lance so that it impinges directly on the dead zone. Enables higher blast volumes, temperatures and more oxygen enrichment to be used without causing charge hanging.
