Abstract

The gas, used instead of air, may be CO/H2/N2 opt. with small quantities of CO2 and/or H2O. The temp. and quantity of the gas are selected according to the thermal requirements of the furnace and the analysis and temp. of the metal, alloy, matte, or speiss to be treated. Pref. the gas may be preheated e.g. to 1700-2400 degrees C e.g. by heat exchanger and/or electricity. The heat of the gas may be regulated by simultaneous heating or cooling injections, e.g. of hotter or cooler reducing gas, or by a mixture of oxidising and reducing substances reacting together to give CO, H2, and N2. Coke consumption is reduced especially by combustion at the tuyeres and cooling produced by cracking when hydrocarbons are injected is avoided.
