Abstract

Wet-spun and stretched fibres from polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile containing at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile in the polymer molecule are subjected while in aquagel form to steam under an absolute pressure of at least 20 pounds per square inch for 0.5 seconds to 0.5 hours and then dried, whereby the dyeability of the fibres is improved. Dyeassisting vinyl lactam polymers, e.g. polyvinylpyrrolidone or polyvinylcaprolactam, may be incorporated in the composition from which the fibres are formed or in the fibres after extrusion while in the aquagel state. The fibres may be subjected to the steam treatment while in a relaxed, completely free-to-shrink condition, while under positive tension or while in an incompletely free-to-shrink condition, and may be dried in either a relaxed condition or under tension at temperatures between room temperature and about 160 DEG C. The fibres may be dyed with acetate dyestuffs and with acid, direct and vat dyes.
