Abstract
In the production of polyacrylonitrile fibres by wet-spinning a polyacrylonitrile solution into an aqueous coagulating bath and stretching the gelled fibres thus formed, the fibres, while they are in aquagel form and in a relaxed free-to-shrink condition, are contacted with an aqueous liquid heat-exchange medium at 90-100 DEG C. for 2-30 seconds and thereafter dried. The medium has a surface tension of not over 30 dynes per centimetre against air when measured at 90-100 DEG C. and preferably contains a small proportion of a surface-active agent such as the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinate. The polyacrylonitrile may be a homopolymer or an acrylonitrile copolymer containing at least about 85 per cent by weight of acrylonitrile in the polymer molecule. The aqueous liquid heat-exchange medium is preferably removed from the fibres before they are dried by washing them with a low surface-tension non-aqueous liquid such as acetone. Alternatively, the individual fibres in a tow may be separated from one another by means of an air blast after the tow has been contacted with the heat-exchange medium. In the example, a solution of polyacrylonitrile in a 60 per cent aqueous solution of zinc chloride is spun into a 43.8 per cent aqueous solution of zinc chloride, and the resulting filaments are washed in distilled water and stretched to a length about 12 times their original length in a water bath at 98 DEG C.; they are then immersed in a relaxed condition for about 10 seconds in boiling water containing about 0.5 per cent of the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinate, and dried for about 5 minutes at about 130 DEG C. The process renders the fibres more thoroughly penetrated by dyestuffs. Specifications 585,367, [Group IV], 716,081 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,558,733, 2,563,640 and 2,614,289 are referred to.
