Yarns and threads, treating with liquids. - Artificial silks made from cellulose esters or ethers, are delustred and rendered opaque by treatment with aqueous emulsions or suspensions of substances having a solvent or swelling action on the cellulose ester or ether, the concentration being below 5 per cent, and the temperature of the treatment lower than the boiling temperature, say 40-80‹ C. According to conditions, the dulling may take place throughout the substance of the filaments, or at their surface only. The dulling may be carried out simultaneously with the removal of grease or size, or even during dyeing. Suitable swelling-agents or solvents are cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol, acetins, methyl phthalate, amyl acetate, ethyl benzoate, ethyl acetylacetate, benzyl alcohol, anisol, phenetol, nitroanisols, nitrophenetols, nitrobenzene, guaiacol, benzaldehyde, and salicylic aldehyde. Substances which readily emulsify with water, are preferred; but others may be employed provided soap or other emulsifying agent is added to the bath. In examples, cellulose acetate materials are dulled by treatment at a raised temperature with baths containing cyclohexanone: nitroanisol and Marseilles soap : monopol soap, guaiacol and rhodamine B : benzaldehyde, sodium sulphoricinate, acetoquinone blue and carmin blue M.C.A.; in the last two cases dulled and dyed products being obtained.
