Abstract

The process described in Specification 259,634, [Class 15 (ii)], for the manufacture of cellulose conversion products is developed by employing for reacting on the cellulosic substance such derivatives of isatoic anhydride as contain at least one aliphatic, cyclo-aliphatic or mixed aliphatic-aromatic radicle with at least eight carbon atoms attached to the benzene nucleus or to the nitrogen atom. As an alternative, the cellulosic substance may be reacted with an isatoic anhydride derivative containing at least one atom or atomic group capable of substitution, and then treated with a reagent capable of introducing the specified radicle. The process is particularly adapted to the treatment of loose or spun textile materials or fabrics of cotton, artificial silk or hemp, or of paper, straw, wood, etc.; and the products which may be coloured or uncoloured, have a wool-like feel, and exhibit water-repelling properties, a fastness to washing, and an affinity for acid dyes. Such derivatives as contain primary amino groups may be diazotized and coupled; or the derivatives, even those containing no primary amino groups, may be reacted with diazo compounds, or alternatively the isatoic anhydride derivatives may contain initially azo radicles. In examples, cotton fabric is treated with N-octodecyl isatoic anhydride in carbon tetrachloride solution, the latter containing sodium ethylate or the fabric being first treated with dilute alcoholic caustic soda. The treated fabric is given a brilliant orange colour by working in a bath of the diazo compound of paranitraniline.
