Abstract
Artificial filaments, threads, yarns, &c. are produced by dry spinning a 20-25 per cent solution of a high viscosity cellulose ester or ether. A high viscosity cellulose acetate is defined as p one which in 6 per cent acetone solution has a viscosity of at least 40 compared with glycerine as 100, and in the case of other esters or ethers, the cellulose in the derivative must be no more degraded than is the cellulose in the cellulose acetate having a viscosity of 40. Preferably the solutions employed have a viscosity of 1 ,5 to 2 times those of corresponding solutions of normal cellulose acetate having, for example, a viscosity of 10 to 20. Suitable cellulose esters are those obtained according to the process of Specification 207,562, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. The cellulose esters or ethers are dissolved, for example, in acetone or mixtures of acetone and alcohol or water, and spun through normal orifices at speeds up to 200 to 300 metres per minute.
