Abstract
541,660. Cellulose ester compositions. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. June 3, 1940, No. 9666. Convention date, June 10, 1939. [Class 2 (ii)] A cellulose ester solution is obtained by using a solvent medium comprising a polymethylene oxide. The solution may be used for the production of artificial filaments, foils, films and like products and also lacquers and plastic compositions. The cellulose ester may be cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, or butyrate. The solvent may comprise dimethylene oxide (ethylene oxide), trimethylene oxide (1:3- propylene oxide), or tetramethylene oxide (1:4-butylene oxide), preferably in conjunction with another solvent. Cellulose acetate or other acetone-soluble cellulose esters may be dissolved in a mixture of acetone and a polymethylene oxide to give solutions of lower viscosity than similar solutions in acetone alone. An addition of a small proportion of water also reduces the viscosity of the solutions. Plasticizers, such as dibutyl tartrate, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, and triacetin may be included in solutions of cellulose acetate in a solvent mixture of acetone and tetramethylene oxide. The solutions which are of reduced viscosity may be more readily filtered and they have less tendency to clog the orifices of the spinnerets when being spun into filaments e.g., by a dry spinning method. The filaments obtained are of higher tenacity than those obtained from solutions of cellulose acetate of corresponding concentrations in acetone containing water but no polymethylene oxide.
