Abstract

327,420. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Oct. 4, 1928. Right of Patent relinquished. Cellulose esters and ethers, processes for making filaments from.-In the manufacture of artificial silk by spinning a solution of a cellulose ester or ether in a volatile organic solvent, the threads leaving the nozzles are treated for a short time with a volatile organic swelling agent in the liquid or vapour state, with the result that the solvent in the threads is partially replaced by the swelling agent, and soft jelly-like threads are obtained, which threads are stretched during the treatment and finally solidified by evaporation of the volatile constituents, with or without continued stretching; strong, highly orientated threads are so obtained. Similar results can be obtained by using a solution of a cellulose ester or ether in a mixture of a volatile organic solvent and a volatile organic swelling agent, or in a solvent mixture of such swelling agents, a part of the solvent, or one of the swelling agents, being displaced from the threads, and the threads being further treated, as described above. Suitable swelling agents are methyl, ethyl, or propyl alcohol, and methyl ethyl ketone. According to the examples (1) a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone is spun into a bath of ethyl alcohol, or into a current of air saturated with the vapour of ethyl alcohol, and the jelly-like threads so produced are drawn off at a speed higher than that at which they are extruded, and finally passed through a current of warm air; (2) a solution of ethyl cellulose in a mixture of equal parts of alcohol and benzene, and (3) a solution of nitrocellulose in a mixture of equal parts of alcohol and ether, are spun as in example (1). Specification 325,857 is referred to.
