Abstract

238,842. Soc. pour la Fabrication de la Soie Rhodiaseta. Aug. 22, 1924, [Convention date]. Apparatus for making filaments; cellulose solutions, processes for making filaments from. - In the dry spinning of artificial silk &c. from solutions of cellulose esters, ethers or other cellulose derivatives, in particular cellulose acetate solutions, the gaseous medium introduced into the cells is already richly laden with the vapours of the solvent whereby filaments of a circular or almost circular cross section are obtained. Bv such an adjustment, the formation of an initial hard layer on the exterior of the filaments is prevented, so permitting a free passage of solvent from the interior and facilitating the drying process; in addition the solvents can be readily recovered by direct condensation. Conveniently, spinning takes place in a closed system constituted by the cell a, condenser g, propelling-device e, and re-heater j; the spinning solution is supplied to the spinning-head b through a pipe c jacketed for heating, and the filaments leave the cell through a small opening d; a branch n connected to aspirating and solventrecovery apparatus enables gas to be withdrawn so as to create within the cell a depression sufficient to prevent the escape of solvent vapours through the outlet d. Alternatively, a system employing natural circulation may be used, the evaporative gases being supplied to the upper part of the cells and after being laden with solvent, falling by gravity. To obviate explosions, it is convenient to employ an inert gas as the medium in circulation. The apparatus may be otherwise arranged and constructed as described in Specification 233,384. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the manufacture of artificial silk of cross-sections other than circular, by suitably varying the proportion of solvent vapours in the gaseous medium introduced into the cells. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
