Abstract

323,221. British Celanese, Ltd., and Taylor, W. I. Sept. 19, 1928. Apparatus for making filaments.-Travelling artificial filaments are subjected to a fluid blast, stream or jet so as to produce a tangled mass suitable for use as described in Specification 323,209, [Class 120 (iii), Yarns &c.]. Suitably, the filaments are subjected to an air blast by means of an ejector device of the kind described in Specification 322,557, and, as described in that Specification, the filaments may also be stretched by the blast. Alternatively, the filaments may be stretched before subjection to the blast. The filaments may be produced by dry- or wet-spinning, and may have a base of cellulose or cellulose acetate or other ester of cellulose or cellulose ether. As shown in Fig. 1, filaments 5 from a jet 6 are passed through an ejector device 8 of the kind described in Specification 322,557. Compressed air is supplied to the device through a pipe 9, and further blasts may be introduced into the cell through pipes 17. A baffle 16 assists the dispersion of the filaments, which collect in the bottom of the cell and are withdrawn through a door 15. In Fig. 2, the ejector device 21 is located outside the cell, and the filaments 18 are stretched before reaching the device by passage round a roller 20 rotating at a sufficiently high speed. The filaments are dissociated one from another before reaching the ejector device by passage over guide-bars 23, 25 and under a bent guide-bar 24. Specifications 165,519 and 198,023 also are referred to.
