[Class 120 (i)] A carding engine is characterized by the provision, behind the doffer roller A, of a rotating cage G which is subjected to internal suction over a portion of its periphery defined by a stationary damper H, so that the resultant induced air current causes the fleece C leaving the doffer A to adhere to the operative portion of the cage's periphery, such fleece (before reaching, or after release from, the suction cage) being passed through a guide plate orifice E whereby it is laterally condensed to form a narrow web, lap or sliver. As shown, fleece C is removed from doffer A by a doffing comb B, and the condensed web or sliver C<SP>1</SP> passes between calender rollers F, F to a pair of suction cages G, G each provided with an adjustable damper H. The speeds of rollers F and cages G are arranged to give an initial draft to the sliver which then proceeds to a coiler can. A perforated plate J directs dust, loose fibres, etc., falling between the cages and the calender rollers, to the lower cage. In alternative arrangements the calender rollers may be dispensed with, and the lower cage may be replaced by a plain roller. The condensing guide plate and calender rollers may be situated behind the cage or cages instead of in front thereof, and the doffing comb B may be dispensed with, the fleece being removed from the doffer by the suction of the cages. A set of drawing rollers may be arranged behind the suction cages to increase any draft provided between the suction cages and the rollers feeding the fleece, to or from the condensing plate, before the sliver is collected in the coiler can. This drawing of the sliver enables the first drawing stage in the subsequent treatment of the sliver to be dispensed with.
