Abstract
Bundles of continuous filaments are pre<PICT:0418226/IV/1> in a form suitable for stapling by blowing the travelling filaments in the direction of travel so as to separate individual filaments from one another, and winding the separated filaments so as to collect them in a state of substantial though incomplete parallelism. Artificial filaments such as those of cellulose esters or ethers may be treated and collected continuously with their production. The rate of winding is such that the filaments are wound with little or no tension. The blowing nozzle may direct the filaments towards a part of the winding surface which is moving in a direction reverse to that in which the filaments are travelling. Natural or artificial continuous filaments may be taken from bobbins, cheeses, or other packages. They should have little or no twist. As shown in the Figure, continuous artificial filaments 3 are taken from a dry spinning cell 4 round a roller 7, through a blowing device 11 to a collecting bobbin or reel 18. Adjustable tension rods 8, 9 also effect a preliminary separation of the filaments. The blower 11 comprises an inner tube 13 through which the filaments pass, and an outer casing, air being forced through the annular space from a valve-controlled pipe 14. The mouth of the device 11 is flared and the filaments are spread out by the air current into a mass of separated filaments 17 which are received by the drum 18 at a point above its axis. The drum rotates so that the filaments which have formed a loose pile are drawn downwardly. It has flanges 19 to confine the filaments laterally. It may be driven by cone and belt gearing and the speed may be controlled by means of a belt adjusting fork operated by handwheel and screw. The peripheral speed of the drum is slightly less than that of the feed roller 7. The bundle of filaments on the drum may be wetted with liquids containing hygroscopic substances to facilitate cutting by a guillotine or other device. The preliminary separation effected by the rods 8 and 9 may be assisted by frictional electricity generated by the travelling filaments which tend to repel one another. The effect may be increased by surfacing the rods with nonconducting material. Specifications 323,221, [Class 2 (ii)], 382,651, and 387,003, [both in Group IX], are referred to.
