Abstract

Filamentary material is passed through a helical path, liquid is introduced into the space surrounded by the helix and is rotated at sufficient speed to force it outwardly through the helix. In Fig. 1, the filament 2 passes over a thread-advancing reel consisting of two sets of thread-supporting bars 5 and 12, the axis of which are eccentric and inclined with respect to each other. The bars 5 may be perforated as shown at 30 and 31 to assist flow of liquor. The reel is surrounded by a receptacle 32 divided into two portions by the partition 33, and drain pipes 34 and 35 are provided for each portion. Treating liquors may be led into the lower half of the reel through the pipe 22 <PICT:0615140/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0615140/IV (c)/2> and perforations 23, and into the upper half through the pipe 20 and nozzle 24. In the modification of Fig. 7, liquor is supplied to the outer end only of the reel which is surrounded by a closely fitting receptacle 32a tapered towards its inner end to assist flow of liquor over the surface of the filaments on the reel. The liquor is withdrawn by pumps 50. In another modification the inside wall of the receptacle 32a is rifled. Specifications 583,990, 594,129 and 594,130 are referred to.
