Abstract

A continuous tow of filaments 1 is treated by passing it into a liquid contained in an annular trough 3 rotatable about a vertical axis whilst liquid is passed continuously from the pipe 8 on to the solid centre portion from which it passes into the trough and rotates with a mean speed substantially equal to that of the trough. The tow is piled into the trough by means of the oscillating arm 4. The liquid flows from trough 3 through the perforated bottom 5. If necessary more than one trough may be used and these may be on separate axes or concentric with each other. In an example, a solution of groundnut globulin is coagulated and the tow of filaments is stretched and passed over roller 2 and guide 4 into trough 3 from which it is later withdrawn over roller 9. It is stretched between rollers 9 and 10 and then piled into <PICT:0623460/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0623460/IV (a)/2> trough 12 and later withdrawn by roller 17 and stretched again while passing through the bath 19 situated between rollers 17 and 18. It is then piled into the inner trough 13 and finally withdrawn over roller 23. Trough 12 is supplied with liquid at 15 p and liquid is withdrawn at 16, the rate of flow being such that there is substantially no relative movement between the liquid and the trough. Similarly, trough 13 is supplied with liquid by pipes 21 and liquid is withdrawn by pipe 22.ALSO:<PICT:0623460/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0623460/IV (c)/2> A continuous tow of filaments 1 is treated by passing it into a liquid contained in an annular trough 3 rotatable about a vertical axis whilst liquid is passed continuously from the pipe 8 on to the solid centre portion from which it passes into the trough and rotates with a mean speed substantially equal to that of the trough.
