Abstract

<PICT:0742784/III/1> Solid granular material is contacted with a liquid with or without a gas, the liquid having a specific gravity less than that of the granular material, by passing the material downwardly over perforated inclined surfaces in counter-current with the liquid or liquid and gas, the rate of flow of the latter being adjusted to cause the granular material to exert negligible pressure on the inclined surfaces without passing into the fluidized state. The flow of liquid may be intermittent and a mixture of granular solids may be used. A suitable apparatus comprises a vessel 1 with inclined surfaces 12, 13, and a controllable discharge 4 for the solid granular materials. Liquid enters at 8 and overflows at 9. A gas may enter at 10 and pass through the perforated pipes. Other modified constructions are disclosed and the use of pneumatic, optical and other control means for the regulation of the solids discharge is discussed. The liquid may comprise water or aqueous solutions, organic solvents or solutions of organic substances or colloidal suspensions and dispersions. The process and apparatus of the invention can be used, e.g. for the extraction of solid materials with aqueous or organic solvents (in particular treating oil-seeds), chemical or physical reactions between the solid and liquid or solid/solid phases (if mixed granular material is used). The solid material may act as a catalyst.
