Abstract
<PICT:0596258/III/1> <PICT:0596258/III/2> The upper surface of a bed of solid particles 2 in the fluid state (as defined in Specification 569,691), contained in a vessel from which the solid is being withdrawn at 9, is maintained at a predetermined level 8 by introducing solid from a column 7 which terminates substantially at the predetermined level. The tube 6 enters the top or the side of the vessel and may be slidable so as to vary the level of the bed. When the solid is in the form of a "boiling" bed, the cross-section of the vessel may be increased at the desired level so as to reduce the gas velocity, a plate may be arranged at the end of the tube 6, or the tube may be outside the vessel and lead to a side chamber at the desired level. In a modified apparatus shown in Fig. 2, another solid introduced through tube 12 is mixed with part of the first solid from pipe 10. The process may be used in reactions between gases and solids, catalytic gas reactions, and in the treatment of gases with adsorbents.
