Abstract
1,024,870. Mixing fluids; steam distillation. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. Dec. 9, 1963 [Dec. 17, 1962], No. 48595/63. Headings BIB and B1C. Apparatus for circulating and turbulently intermixing a liquid and steam to drive off a volatile component comprises a vessel 12, Fig. 1, through which the liquid is circulated by means of the tubes 11, 15, 16, 17, and 18 which re-enters the vessel 12 tangentially. Steam under pressure is supplied by a pipe 23 to a manifold 24 and thence is discharged as jets into the liquid stream by pipes as at 28, 29, 30, 31, 34, Fig. 2; coaxial conical baffles as 28<SP>1</SP>, 31<SP>1</SP>, 34<SP>1</SP> surround the discharge ends of the steam jet pipes and guide the liquid into the steam jets. The baffles are supported independently of the steam jet pipes by a plate 36. These may be one only or several steam jet pipes and the plate 36 may extend completely across the tube 16 so that all the liquid must pass through the baffles. (Figs. 3 to 9, not shown).
