Abstract

In a process for oxidising saturated hydrocarbons (see Division C2), part of the liquid phase is continuously withdrawn and reinjected as stirring liquid from at least one injection point with a direction which imparts rotational movement to the liquid phase. The charge is introduced through duct 14 into vertical tower 1 which has a conical bottom terminating with outlet duct 2 for liquid products, duct 3, conveying an O 2 -containing gas, e.g. air, preferably terminates in a perforated ring distributor the holes of which are oriented towards the bottom of 1 (or to avoid the ring, the gas may be injected through holes in the conical base by a device not shown), the liquid outflow from 2 is aspirated by pump P and forced through four diametrically opposed pairs of stirring ducts 4, 5, 6, 7 which may be narrowed to injection nozzles and which are oriented tangentially to the column walls so as to wash them. Alternatively, these may be used 6 stirring ducts conveying the liquid at different levels and opening into 1 at angular intervals of 120 from each other. Duct 7 is preferably close to the liquid-gas interface 9 and at least the majority of the ducts are oriented to impart to the liquid as a whole a rotational movement in one direction about a vertical axis. Duct 10 is for evacuating residual gases and duct 11 conveys the liquid hydrocarbon for washing the gases into cup 12 from which liquid overflows onto the outside of upturned funnel 13, so that the escaping gases are scrubbed by a continuous screen of washing liquid.
