Abstract

624,398. Washing milk churns &c. ENOCK, A. G. July 13, 1947, No. 15594. [Class 138(i)] [Also in Group XXX] In a washing or sterilizing machine for churns and the like, the churns pass in inverted condition over a plurality of jet chambers, each chamber being formed with a perforated concave upper surface pierced by jet openings arranged on a plurality of circles, the openings being so arranged that the jets pass between each other on their passage upward into the vessel. As shown in Fig. 1, inverted churns A are carried on a plurality of carriers B, enclosed within baffles T, all mounted on a platform C which is intermittently rotatable about a vertical axis by a sleeve D driven from a bevel, wheel V. The carriers are rotated about their axes by means of teeth b thereon, engaging with a spur wheel W. At predetermined intervals, the platform C is brought to rest so that a churn is directly over a jet head O supplied with cleansing liquid by a pipe P. A branch pipe U extends vertically upwards from pipe P and has upper horizontallyextending arms T<SP>4</SP> between which the churn lid A<SP>1</SP> is carried within the baffle T on supports S. Pipes U and T<SP>4</SP> are perforated to cause jets of liquid to impinge on the sides and bottom of the churn and the top and bottom of the churn lid. The churn situated on the right of Fig. 1 is dried on the inside with hot air from a pipe T<SP>5</SP> having a branch connection extending vertically upwards to direct a blast of hot air into the interior of the churn lid. In a modification, Fig. 1a, the jet heads may be rotated about their axes while the carriers remain stationary with respect to the platform. The drive to the jet heads from the spur wheel G includes a countershaft G<SP>2</SP>. Another arrangement of the machine allows the churns to be passed over jet heads in line, in lieu of, in a circular path. The jet head O<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, comprises a chamber R<SP>1</SP> with an upper concave surface Q having perforations R. The chamber is supplied with liquid by a pipe p<SP>1</SP> and upwardly - directed converging - diverging jets emerge from the perforations R. In a modification, Fig. 8, each jet head is rotated by reaction jets emerging from nozzles R<SP>2</SP> and the mechanical drive is dispensed with.
