Abstract
<PICT:0669680/III/1> <PICT:0669680/III/2> In effecting gaseous chemical reactions in the presence of fluidized particles of a solid reactant or catalyst, the particles differing in size or density, a longitudinally extending hearth with outwardly sloping walls 3, 4, Fig. 2, is employed, the angle of slope of the walls being so selected that the rate of upward flow of the gases from the base grid G is progressively reduced in ascending through the bed M of solid particles. Gases may be withdrawn through channels 5, 6 wherein, if desired, they may be burnt by the addition of air, thereby heating the walls. In a modification, Fig. 3, the base comprises a concave sole 12.
