Abstract
720,359. Gas carburizing. DEUTSCHE GOLD - UND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. Dec. 24, 1952 [Dec. 31, 1951], No. 32724/52. Class 72. A process for car. burizing iron and iron alloys by a carburizing gas comprises gener. ating the gas by reaction between an oxygen-containing gas and a solid carbonaceous substance disposed in the treatment chamber but separate from the material being treated, the solid carbonaceous material occupying not more than one-fifth of the volume of the chamber and the gases being circulated within the chamber. As shown, a carburizing furnace 1 has carbonaceous material with or without accelerators, enclosed in perforated containers 5, 6, into which air may be supplied from pipes 10. Additional air may be added from a pipe 9. The gases in the furnace are circulated by a fan 7. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the carbonaceous material may be laid in a box on the floor of the furnace and covered with a perforated top on which the material being treated may rest. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a continuous furnace may be used. The oxygen-containing gases may be preheated, e.g. by arranging the pipes conveying the gases inside the furnace or building such pipes into the furnace structure.
