Method and device for the carburization of iron and iron alloys The method of the present invention relates to the introduction of carbon into iron and iron alloys, in particular into low-carbon steels, via the gas phase. It is known that low-carbon steels can be carburized by treating them with carburizing gases at temperatures above 800, the gases being generated outside the carburizing area.
For this purpose, generators are used in which solid carbonaceous substances are gasified with restricted access to oxygen. It is also common practice to burn gases such as town gas or natural gas in special generators with a lack of air and to pass the combustion product into the coal furnace after separating the water and carbon dioxide. These gases can optionally also be carburized by adding hydrocarbons such as butane or propane in precisely metered amounts.
One can also proceed in such a way that the material to be carburized is wrapped in carbonaceous powder or coated with a paste of such substances and heated to the carburization temperature, which is generally between 800 and 950, with the exclusion of air until the carburization is the desired depth has reached.
These methods either require considerable expenses for facilities for the production, control and metering of the carbonization gases or are not sufficiently regulatable to enable uniform carbonization of any size of operation. The packing process does not rule out the risk of overheating and thus overcarburization or even local melting of the goods to be carbonized and also works with poor thermal efficiency due to the poor thermal conductivity of the carbonic agents.
With the method of the present invention, these disadvantages can be effectively avoided. The invention relates to a method for carburizing iron and iron alloys via the gas phase, which is characterized in that the carburizing gas is generated in the carburizing chamber itself by reacting solid carbonaceous substances with an oxygen-containing gas, which are arranged separately from the material to be carbonized , wherein the solid substances delivering the carbonization gas take up at most 115 of the volume of the carbonization space. Air in particular can be used as the oxygen-containing gas.
The solid carbonaceous substances capable of delivering the carbonaceous gas can preferably occupy about 1110 or at most 1 / 1o of the volume of the carbonized space. In contrast to the packing method, the carbonization gas is also generated in the carbonization space, but spatially separated from the material to be carbonized.
Compared to the processes previously used for carbonization, any effort for the creation and heating of special generators is avoided without the risk of partial overcarburization and destruction of the surface of the workpieces through direct contact, as is the case with packaging in carbonaceous material the carbonaceous substances.
Working according to the method of the invention is extremely simple, since it is only necessary to bring the carbonaceous material used into the furnace, expediently in the container located therein, to heat the furnace to the coal temperature and to bring the material to be carbonized Easy to drive into the carbonization area.
At the temperature required for the carbonization process, the carbonation gas is formed automatically with the oxygen-containing gas located in the carbonization room or additionally introduced, the composition of which can be controlled in a simple manner by the amount of the oxygen-containing gas, the temperature and the type and distribution of the carbon-containing material .
As soon as the required carbonization depth is reached under the conditions to be determined by simple experiments, the coaled goods can be driven out and replaced with fresh ones, as long as sufficient quantities of the solid substances producing the carbonization gas are still present in the carbonization space.
Shaped bodies made of charcoal, in particular charcoal, have proven to be extremely useful as solid substances for generating the carbonization gas. Such shaped bodies are preferably made from charcoal dust with or without binders, optionally with the addition of activators, such as carbonates of alkalis or alkaline earths. The pellets obtained are expediently dried and possibly calcined before use. They can also be used as granules in grain sizes between 3 and 6 mm for carburization.
Charcoal moldings to which finely divided metals or metal mixtures either in the form of metal powder or suitable organic or inorganic compounds which are converted into finely divided metal when the material is annealed have been found to be particularly effective for carrying out the process of the invention.
The metals of the iron group, in particular Visen or nickel, are very suitable. By using the metal activators, the addition of carbonates of the alkalis or alkaline earths can be reduced in an advantageous manner. so that the ash formed after the consumption of the carbonaceous substance supplying the carbonaceous gas is poor in alkali or alkaline earth compounds and can therefore be less damaging to the furnace construction material.
The device for carrying out the method according to the invention is characterized by a furnace serving to receive the material to be carbonated, in the interior of which gas-permeable containers for receiving the substance supplying the carbon gas are arranged.
As a gas-permeable container for the carbonaceous substances generating the carbonaceous gas, z. B. on the Wandun gene of the Kohlungsraumes attached bags or other types of containers made of perforated Ble surfaces, wire mesh or expanded metal in Be tracht. With the same success, the loading containers can also be provided in the form of perforated sieve bottoms under, between or over the carbon material. The containers are preferably lined up in such a way that they can be easily removed from the carbonization space in order to freshen up the filling.
According to another embodiment of the invention, these containers are attached to the walls or the lids of the carbonization space in such a way that they can be reloaded from the outside through filling flaps, stubs or similar devices known per se without disturbing the furnace operation.
The distribution of the containers for the carbonaceous materials that produce the carbon dioxide in the carbon dioxide chamber is largely based on the construction of the carbon chamber, the type of heating and the quantity and nature of the material to be carbonated.
Furnaces of any type can be used as the carbonation chamber, both continuously and continuously. The process can accordingly be carried out, for example, in normal chamber furnaces that can be closed from the side or from above. However, you can also use continuous ovens that are continuously loaded. and be emptied. The material to be carburized can be transported in boxes or sieve trays on any shaped base that is moved through the furnace by means of push-in devices or by walking beams or in a similar manner.
For a rapid and uniform course of the carbonization, it is essential that the oxygen-containing gases located in the furnace or introduced into it have easy access to the solid carbonaceous material forming the carbonization gas. It can therefore be expedient to provide the feed lines for the oxygen-containing gases in the carbonization chamber in such a way that the gases cross the carbon-containing substances on as large an area as possible when they enter.
For the rapid formation of the carbon dioxide gas, it is still beneficial to preheat the oxygen-containing gases, especially air, before they pass through the carbon-containing substances, which can be done, for example, by the exhaust gases from the carbon furnace or by appropriately routing the supply lines in the wall of the heated carbon chamber can.
In order to ensure constant contact with the substances forming the carbon dioxide gas, it is advantageous to place means in the carbon dioxide chamber which keep the furnace atmosphere moving and circulate it. This ensures that not only the reaction leading to the formation of the carbonization gas is accelerated, but also its regeneration is promoted and, moreover, the material to be carbonized can be heated quickly and evenly.
As already mentioned, various types of devices can be used to carry out the method, some of which embodiments are explained with reference to FIGS. 1 to 3, for example.
Fig. 1 shows a chamber furnace in the longitudinal section, in your sake of clarity, the heating outside the furnace space is omitted. In Fig. 2, a furnace is shown shape in which the loading is carried out by lifting the lid from above, while Fig. 3 is a continuously arbei border furnace with walking beam conveyor again. In these figures, too, the elements that are expediently located outside the carbonization space are not shown.
In Fig. 1, 1 denotes the actual carbonization space, which is charged through the side opening closed with the cover 2. The hardening material 4 is on a standing on the bottom of the chamber document 3. On the side walls of the chamber are 5 and 6 boxes made of sieve plate for the inclusion of the carbonaceous gas erzeu lowing carbonaceous substance see easily, while on the ceiling of the Koh - ventilation space of the fan 7 is located.
The air supply line 8 is let into the ceiling of the chamber in the form of a pipe coil and opens at 9 into the carbonization space. The branch line 10 also makes it possible to introduce all or part of the gas into the furnace space through the loading of the containers 5 and 6.
In the embodiment of FIG. 2, the opening of the carbonization space is on the top side, so that the carbonization material can be placed on Ge or placed in boxes 11 from above into the furnace. The cover 12 is sealed in a manner known per se with the aid of a sand cup or a liquid seal 13. The carbon material is arranged on a gas-permeable base, for example made of perforated metal sheets, above the container 14 for the carbon-containing substance which supplies the carbon gas.
Appropriately, there is also the container 14 at least on the side facing the coal material made of gas-permeable material, such as. B. perforated sheets. The device also contains fans 15 and 16 on the narrow sides of the carbon dioxide chamber for circulating the gas and a feed 17 for the oxygen-containing gases, e.g. B. Air. If necessary, carburizing substances can also be introduced through this feed.
In the device according to FIG. 3, the charge 18 is promoted in flat boxes 19 through the furnace chamber with the help of a walking beam 20 ge. On the longitudinal walls of the furnace, the container 21 for the carbonaceous substance are brought to generate the carbon dioxide. The furnace chamber is closed on both sides with the aid of the spring doors 22. In principle, it is possible to install one or more fans for the gas circulation in such ovens, for example on the ceiling of the carbonization room, but the frequent opening and closing of the oven with the continuous type of loading and unloading causes a certain movement of the oven atmosphere inevitably given with further admission of air.
For this reason, it is also not absolutely necessary to introduce additional amounts of air, which, however, can be done if necessary, for example through the lines 23 at different points in the carbonization space. When the carbonization is carried out continuously, as can be done in a device according to FIG. 3, the possibility of refilling the container 21 containing the carbon-containing material from the outside is of particular importance. You can also convey the carbon-containing material separately from the material to be carbonated through the furnace by moving containers with this material alternately with the loading containers for the material to be carbonated into the furnace.
With regard to the extensive utilization of the carbon-containing substances for the generation of the carbon gas and the uniformity of the carbonization process. However, it is more advantageous, as described in detail, to provide solid containers for this material, in which it reacts uniformly with the oxygen-containing furnace atmosphere at a largely constant temperature.
