Abstract

1277332 Coking coal METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 8 July 1970 [11 July 1969] 33223/70 Heading C5E Fine grained coke, e.g. for briquetting, is made by trickling fine grained coal down inside a reactor in counter-current to a hot gas past fixtures which restrain free fall and provide a free area available for flow of gas and coal equal to from 60 to 75% of the cross-sectional area of flow. The fixtures comprise horizontal screenplates which extend right across the reactor. Recycled-distillation gases are passed to a burner near the base of the reactor to provide-the hot gas, and secondary air may be delivered to one or more intermediate points in the reactor. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) a cokecooling extension is included at the base, and the recycle gases, after traversing three cyclones and associated scrubbers, are passed to the bottom of the extension. Combustion air is delivered to the point between the extension and the reactor.
