Abstract

1,184,944. Making coke. " BASSE-SAMBRE" SOC. ANON, ETUDES, RECHERCHES, ENTREPRISES. 10 April, 1967 [8 April, 1966; 13 Sept., 1966], No. 16248/67. Heading C5E. Coke is made in a continuous process by treatment of coal or coke fines on a continuously or intermittently moved conveyor which is passed in succession through drying 38, preheating 44, pyrolysis 55, 56, 71 and cooling zones 60, 58, 46. The conveyor comprises trucks 1 which run on rails (22) or slide on bands (25) between pairs of casings 8, 9, the floors (14) of the trucks being perforate to permit vertical passage of gases up or down through the coal in the trucks. The casings 8, 9 and the trucks 1 provide gas-tight enclosures and adjacent pairs of casings are preferably separated by casings 10. Gas connections are shown in Fig. 1. Burners 39, 72 may be supplied with poor gas from 40, optionally mixed with rich gas from 70, and a heat exchanger 48 is included in the circuit. Hoppers 35 . . . 37 deliver respectively coke, material to be carbonized, and optionally semi-coke, which may be ignited at 72. Modifications, illustrated in Figs 2 to 4 (not shown), are concerned mainly with the gas circuits, which include one for air. Other details include reservoirs for rich and poor gas (95, 80), division of the exchanger 48 into several separate compartments for different gases, an enclosed discharge hopper (76) with disintegrator (81), Fig. 3, and the cooling zones (82, 83) Fig. 4, and drying and preheating zones (86, 87) may be on different levels to the conveyor, and the zones (86, 87) may comprise a fluidized bed on a horizontal mechanical conveyor.
