Abstract

1435089 Fixed bed coal gasification GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 12 July 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 23020/75 Divided out of 1435088 Heading C5E A gas mixture containing combustible components is produced by placing a downwardly moving bed of coal and a diluent material into gas exchange relationship with an upwardly moving gas mixture in a coal gasification apparatus, the initial gaseous input at the bottom of the bed being steam and an oxygencontaining gas, wherein a coal/ash/pitch mixture prepared from fines separated from the larger pieces of run-of-mine coal, is extruded as a rod-like extrudate into the interior of the apparatus and broken into pieces exhibiting a shape retaining capability to at least 950‹ F., and then the separated larger pieces of run-ofmine coal are introduced into the apparatus. Diluent material, in addition to ash distributed in the coal charged to the gasifier as extrudate, may take the form of refractory hollow cylinders e.g. of silicon carbide, alumina, zirconia or magnesia, having an outer diameter of at least 1¢ inches, an inner diameter of at least ¥ inch and a minimum length of at least 2 inches may also be fed into the gasifier, e.g. with the separated larger pieces of run-of-mine coal, to provide a volume ratio of cylinders to coal of at least 1 : 1. The pieces of extrudate may be the briquettes of Specification 1,435,090. Caking of the coal is prevented by the break-up of cake formations during conduct to the process, e.g. using a water-cooled stirrer.
