[Also in Group XII] In a process for producing smeltable briquettes moulded from ore and fuel suitable for low-temperature carbonization, and containing, if required, a binder and a flux or fluxes, the briquettes are conveyed on a conveyer 4 through a furnace, are preheated in a primary chamber 1 thereof, subjected to a low temperature carbonization in a main chamber 2 heated by fuel burners 9, 10 (preferably to below the ignition temperature of the fuel) and cooled in a chamber 3 before leaving the furnace, and a reducing temperature is maintained in all the chambers by oxygen-poor combustion of the fuel supplied to the chamber 2. The waste gases and carbonization vapours from the main chamber 2 are withdrawn from the primary chamber 1 near where the briquettes enter, a part thereof being fed through the burners 9, 10 with the fuel and air or oxygen. The carbonization is preferably done under a pressure slightly in excess of atmospheric pressure. The gases and vapours produced in the furnace, the chamber 2 of which comprises two parts 7, 8, have access to the briquettes on the conveyer 4 and the sum of the direct and indirect radiation on to the briquettes is substantially constant over the width of the conveyer 4, which is guided on rails 18, 19 on beams 28 and is made of boxes 20. A conduit 13 leads from the chamber 1 near the entry opening to the chamber 2, a fan 14 in the conduit 13 withdrawing gas from the chamber 1 for supply to the chamber 2, through the burners 9, 10 or through mouths surrounding them. In a modified furnace the conveyer is of an endless form having two parallel runs moving in a horizontal plane and is enclosed by the furnace except for loading and unloading stations which may be adjacent each other in the region of one of the runs, the main chamber being arranged in the region of the other run. The conveyer belt is made of plates, superposed at their ends and connected by a chain, and is held at each side by a horizontal guide rail.
