Abstract

<PICT:0882920/III/1> In a process for continuously baking carbon articles in a tunnel furnace wherein trucks containing shaped bodies consisting of a mixture of carbon and a carbonizable binder are passed in succession through a preheating zone for heating the bodies slowly to a temperature of 500-800 DEG C. and then through a more rapid baking zone, each truck is covered with a metal hood during passage through the first zone, a protective gas being fed into the hood and a mixture of the protective gas and tar vapour removed therefrom, the hood is removed from the truck at the end of the first zone, and the uncovered truck is passed through the second zone in a reducing atmosphere. The protective gas may be flue or producer gas. The protective gas and tar vapour may be separated and the protective gas recycled. The tar vapour may be burnt to heat the furnace. Electric heating may alternatively be employed. The articles may be subsequently graphitized. As shown, a tunnel furnace comprises a prebaking section 1 and a baking section 2 separated by a lock 3. The lock may be dispensed with (Fig. 2, not shown). The single prebaking zone of Fig. 2 may be replaced by two shorter prebaking zones in parallel (Fig. 3, not shown).
