Abstract

Sintered vanadium carbide briquettes are prepared by heating fused and crushed V2O5 to 565-620 DEG C. in a hydrocarbon atmosphere to form V2O4, which is then heated to at least 1040 DEG C. in a hydrocarbon atmosphere to form VCxOy (where x is 0.4-0.6, y is 0.4-0.8), which is cooled to ambient temperature in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, mixed with sufficient C to effect a stoichiometric balance of C to combined O and to give an 8-15% excess of C, briquetting the mixture, heating the briquettes to 1370-1480 DEG C. while withdrawing the evolved gases until gas evolution stops, and cooling the briquettes in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The hydrocarbon atmosphere may comprise natural gas, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, C4H10, or mixtures thereof. Specified carbons are graphite and lampblack. The first heating stage (565-620 DEG C.) and second (1040 DEG C.) may be conducted for 60-90 and 100-180 minutes respectively, and finely divided C may be added prior to either stage. The said first and second heating stages may be carried out in externally-fired rotating retort furnaces wherein the material is progressively heated as it passes through the furnaces; two such furnaces preferably being placed in tandem such that the material from the first stage furnace discharges directly into the second. The final heating stage (1370-1480 DEG C.) may be conducted in a vacuum furnace until the pressure is less than 0.05 mm. Hg.
