Abstract

879,664. Reducing iron and other metallic oxides. ASPEGREN, O. E. A. June 17, 1958 [June 18, 1957; May 8, 1958], No. 19417/58 Classes 72 and 82(1) A method of reducing metalic oxides by cold or preheated reducing gas containing free hydrogen comprises moving preheated bodies countercurrently with the oxides in a drum rotating about a horizontal axis, the oxides and the bodies being introduced at, opposite ends of the drum and the temperature and/or the rate of supply of the bodies being such that the reduction takes place at a temperature not above 870‹C. As shown iron oxide may be suplied to a rotary furnace 1 at one end and balls, heated to 610‹C. at the other. As the balls move from right to left their temperature is reduced until at the centre portion their temperature is 570‹C. and at this zone hydrogen is introduced into the furnace through slats 5 from a funnel 7. The iron produced is heated by the fresh balls to, 610‹C to make it non-. pyrophoric and is discharged at 9, the balls being discharged by grids 12 and deposited in a funnel 13. The balls may be reheated and recirculated or may be used to cool the discharged iron, or preheat the iron oxide, or both before reheating. The gas may be a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
