Abstract
819,882. Treating coal. RUHRKOHLENBERATUNG G.m.b.H. Dec. 14, 1956 [Nov. 12, 1956], No. 38176/56. Classes 50 and 55 (2). A process for reducing the coking capacity of coal comprises bringing a layer of coal on a travelling grate into contact with hot oxygencontaining gas passing through the thickness of the layer, whilst the temperature of the coal is kept below 300 ‹ C. to prevent it softening. The coal is fed from hopper 21 to the travelling grate 19a and passes from grate to grate until it reaches the outlet 22, the grates 19a, 19b, 19c being arranged so that alternate ones travel in opposite directions. Hot gas, such as furnace gases with or without additional air, and preferably having an oxygen content between 10 and 21 per cent, is fed separately to each tier as shown at 23 so as to pass through the thickness of the coal layers on the travelling grates, the waste gases being withdrawn separately at 25a, 25b and 25c.
