Abstract

719,225. Treating coal. NATIONAL COAL BOARD. Aug. 25, 1952 [Aug. 23, 1951], No. 19885/51. Class 50 A process for treating coal to reduce its agglutinating value comprises treating the coal in pulverulent form as a fluidized mass with a gas containing free oxygen at a temperature above that at which carbonization would normally occur, the operating conditions being such that the coal does not undergo substantial carbonization. The coal is preferably preheated to a temperature of at least 80‹ C. and the moisture content reduced to not more than 0.5 per cent by weight before the oxidizing treatment. In an example a coal having a substantial combustion temperature of 420‹ C. was treated at 450‹ C. and the agglutinating value of the coal was reduced to zero. In apparatus described for carrying out the process fine coal is fed by a worm feed 8 from a hopper 4 into a fluidized treatment zone 6 having an upper portion of increased diameter. Air supplied at the base of the zone 6 by a blower 9 preferably after having passed through a preheater 10. The air passes out of the zone 6 through a cyclone separator 12, separated fines being returned to the mass in the treatment zone by a pipe 11. From the separator 12 the air passes through a second separator 13 and finally out through line 14 whence it may be used for preheating the coal in a preheating chamber 2. freated coal is withdrawn through line 15 passing through a cooler 16. Cold air for cooling the coal enters the cooler 16 through line 22 and leaves by line 19 and is used in preheating chamber 2. Fines from the separator 13 are discharged into the cooler 16.
