Abstract

901,783. Carbonizing coal; purifying gas. SIMON-CARVES Ltd. Feb. 16, 1961 [May 30, 1960], No. 5723/61. Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2). In a fluidized process of carbonizing particulate coal the gases leaving the fluidized bed are passed through a layer, preferably also fluidized, of particulate metal oxide to remove tar and fine particles of carbon. The metal oxide may be hematite, magnetite, ironstone, minette, ferrous oxide or copper oxide. The oxide may be withdrawn from the layer of oxide, regenerated by oxidation and returned to the layer for further use. In the apparatus shown, particulate coal is fed into the uppermost of three fluidized zones 4, 5 and 6 and is preheated there by rising gases before being passed via pipe 13 to the carbonization zone 6. A mixture of air and a combustible gas supplied at 7 is burned in the zone 6 to carbonize and fluidize the preheated coal therein and coke is withdrawn through a standpipe 3. A mixture of combustion and distillation gas passes upwardly through a bed of metal oxide in zone 5 and then through the preheating zone 4 to a gas outlet 2. The gas withdrawn may be used in part to supply heat to the carbonizing zone 6. Metal oxide is continuously fed to and withdrawn from the bed 5 via a feeder 18 and an outlet 21.
