Abstract
854,661. Gas producers. LENTJES, KESSELSCHMIEDE UND MASCHINENBAU F. Oct. 25, 1957, No. 33340/57. Class 55 (1). Carbon monoxide containing gas is produced by passing air or oxygen at a velocity greater than 100 metres per second through an incandescent layer of coke 3 formed of densely packed particles having a grain size less than 10 mm., the gas being drawn off immediately after its production through a heat-resistant grid 9 so that the coke particles are not entrained in the gas. As shown, coke is fed in at 21 and slag removed at 4, there being two inlets 6, 6<SP>1</SP> and two outlets 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, each of the latter having a screen 9 or 91 of porous refined steel. The gas produced has a calorific value of 900 kilocalories per standard cubic metre or if the air or oxygen is mixed with 20 to 40% by weight of steam, the resultant gas may have a calorific value up to 1200 kilocalories.
