Abstract
516,645. Gas producers. ADLER, R. July 4, 1938. Nos. 19715, and 19716. Convention dates, July 2, 1937, and Oct. 7, 1937. [Class 55(i)] [Also in Group III] The throughput of coal in a producer and also the supply of air and steam thereto are increased above the normal operating rates to obtain a residue of slag and ash mixed with 25-50 per cent. of carbon by weight, the coal being only partially gasified while maintaining the gas production. The residue forms an adsorption and purifying agent, particularly for bleaching and deodorizing liquids. In an example, a daily input of 25,000 Kg. of Bohemian brown coal consuming 5,000 Kg. steam with sufficient air to give a steam saturation of 45-50 per cent. is increased to an input of 27,400 Kg. of coal consuming 5,500 Kg. of steam, the steam saturation of the air being as before; the yield of slag and ash residue increasing from 1,000 Kg. containing 0 to' 3 per cent. of carbon to 2,500 Kg. containing 40-50 per cent. carbon. The adsorptive power of the residue may be increased by treatment at 650 to 900‹C. with steam in the absence of air, preferably in a muffle or retort furnace. The ground residue may be graded by means of sieves of different mesh.
