Abstract
431,489. Gas producers. JOHNSON, J. Y., 47, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges. ; Frankforton-Main, Germany) April 11, 1934, No. 10920. [Class 55 (i)] A gas suitable for use as illuminating gas is obtained by supplying gases such as waste gases from low temperature carbonization plants or oil cracking plants, fuel distillation gases, natural gas, or gases from the destructive hydrogenation of coal tars or mineral oils to a gas producer, such as that described in Specification 214,544, [Class 55 (i)], in which the incandescent fine grained fuel is kept in movement similar to that of a boiling liquid. These gases may be mixed with steam or carbon dioxide, and the gas rich in oxygen for maintaining combustion may also have an addition of steam or carbon dioxide. The resulting gas contains at least 12 per cent, and preferably between 20 and 30 per cent of methane. The producer comprises a stirrer 4, slag outlet 5, an inlet 6 for the calorific gas and steam, and inlets 7 for the oxygen and steam. The layer of coal 8 fed from a hopper 9 is set in vigorous motion by the gases introduced. Oxygen may also, or only, be introduced above the layer of coal. Dust is removed from the gases in a separator 13 and returned to the fuel bed through a duct 14.
