Abstract
533,086. Carbonizing process and apparatus. WOODALL - DUCKHAM (1920), Ltd. (Didier- Werke Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 21, 1939, No. 26302. [Class 55 (i)] In the production of synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) from solid fuels with the simultaneous recovery of valuable hydrocarbons in continuously operated, externally heated vertical retorts, as described in Specification 461,402, in which the fuel passes in turn through a preheating zone I, a carbonizing zone II, a conversion zone III, and a water gas zone IV, the gas from the carbonizing zone is led away at 6 through recovery plant T for removal of tars and certain hydrocarbons, and the remaining gas is returned at 7 to the conversion zone. Gas outlets 3 are provided at various levels in the pre-treatment zone, and a gas outlet 5 for the synthesis gas is provided at the bottom of the conversion zone down which pass the gases from the recovery plant, part of these gases being supplied at 8 to the bottom of the water gas zone, and passing upwards in counterflow to the fuel. The condensate water from the recovery plant 7 may be returned as water vapour to the retort together with the gas. The gas is withdrawn from the carbonizing zone at a temperature of between 550‹ and 650‹C.
