Abstract

611,721. Coking processes; retorts. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTION DE FOURS. Aug. 10, 1945, No. 20596. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1941. [Class 55(i)] In a retort 1 for distilling coal, lignite, &c., with a view to obtaining a gas rich in hydrogen and carbon monoxide, in which the fuel descends from inlets 2, 2<1> to coke discharge outlets 3, 3<1>, a vertical central gas withdrawal channel 4, 4<1> with independent heating flues extends down the middle of the retort to a point somewhat above the top of a wall 8, and independently adjustable steam inlets 9, 9<1>, 9<11>, and 11, 11' are provided at various heights in the upper part of the retort and at the top of a wall 8. Distillation of the fuel commences in zones AA<1>, the resulting coke becoming incandescent in zones BB<1>, and the gaseous products dissociating in zones CC' to form carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon. Water gas produced in zones DD<1> mixes .with the descending gases which'are further heated in the discharge channels with conversion of organic sulphur compounds to hydrogen sulphide and hydrocarbons to hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Specifications 461,402, 481.278,.. 531,288 ;are, referred to.
