Abstract
1453787 Reducing gas ETUDES ET RECHERCHES INDUSTRIELLES ET METALLURGIQUES-ERIM 31 Jan 1974 4544/74 Heading C5E A gas with a high CO 2 and/or hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, content is converted into a reducing gas containing CO in a vertical-axis shaft furnace 1 by supplying solid carbonaceous combustible material 2, e.g. coal, coke or ore to an upper zone of the furnace, e.g. via hopper 6, introducing the gas to be converted into a lower zone at 4, introducing oxygenated gas into a central zone via injectors 3, maintaining the temperature in the central zone above 1,000‹ C. by combustion of part of the gas to be converted with the oxygenated gas, the gas being converted in the central zone, removing converted gas from the upper zone via extraction apparatus 7 and may be recycled, and regulating the rate of flow of solid material through the furnace and oxygenated gas into the furnace so that the temperature of the converted gas removed from the upper zone is low relative to the control zone temperature. The gas to be converted introduced into the furnace and the solid material removed from the furnace may be at a temperature which is low relative to the temperature of the central zone. The oxygenated gas may include oxygen and some of the gas to be converted, oxygen and a hydrocarbon other than the gas to be converted, and maybe mixed with water vapour. CO 2 may be added to the oxygenated gas to control the maximum furnace temperature.
