Abstract

1,181,209. Separating oxygen and nitrogen. BERGWERKSVERBAND G.m.b.H. 6 Sept., 1968 [12 June, 1968], No. 42637/68. Addition to 1166518. Heading B1L. The process of separating oxygen and nitrogen mixtures, suitably air, into fractions enriched in oxygen and nitrogen according to Specification 1166518 is improved by replacing the oxidised or unoxidised coal used therein by an oxidised coke produced by oxidising coal particles of size below 0.04 mm. to an oxygen content of 3-25% by weight, suitably in a fluidised bed, mixing the oxidised particles so produced with 15-30% by weight of a binder such as pitch, sulphite lye, bentonite or molasses to form shaped articles of particle size 2-10 mm., and then thermally treating the particles obtained at a rate of 1-100‹C., preferably 5-10‹C., per minute to a temperature of 500-1200‹C., preferably 900‹C. The oxidised coke obtained is suitably comminuted to a particle size of 0.1-4 mm. before use.
